Strengthening Critical Care Services

Ellis Hospital Grows with Help from The Schenectady Foundation

The Schenectady Foundation Grant helped Ellis build the modern ICU it needed to meet growing demand for critical care services.

Thanks to contributions from the community and a $200,000 grant from The Schenectady Foundation, Ellis Hospital has built the modern intensive care unit it needs to meet growing demand for critical care services. The two-story, 36-bed unit brings cutting-edge critical care technology to Schenectady County, giving doctors and nurses an even greater ability to save lives.

At 30,000 square feet, the new ICU is three times larger than the previous unit. Its new location, next to the main Nott Street entrance, is closer to the emergency department, operating room, radiology department and cardiac catheterization lab, reducing the time it takes to transport critically ill patients to these vital services.

In 2000, a $250,000 grant from The Schenectady Foundation was instrumental in enabling Ellis Hospital to totally redesign and improve the emergency room.
