Keeping High Quality Rehabilitative Care in Schenectady
Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital Grant Expands Pediatrics Program
Sunnyview Hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical rehabilitative care unlike any other facility in the area, providing specialty services to nearly 14,000 patients of all ages each year.
To continue to best meet the rehabilitative needs of our community, Sunnyview has embarked on its own extensive rehabilitation, substantially aided by a grant from The Schenectady Foundation. The grant was part of the Foundation’s interest in child health and development, and assisted the establishment of a pediatrics program and unit.
The project focuses on the West Building of the hospital, which has not been renovated or upgraded in 27 years. Plans are underway to completely renovate the second floor and to add a third floor, which will accommodate a growing outpatient pulmonary and vascular rehabilitation program as well as outpatient amputee, scoliosis and rheumatology clinics. A comprehensive center for pulmonary care and a dedicated 15-bed pediatrics unit (in collaboration with Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital) are cornerstones of the facility upgrade.

Eleven-year-old Mario Isopo of Niskayuna works with Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital physical therapist Patti Valenza. When Mario came to Sunnyview, following the removal of a benign tumor on his spine, using the stairs was almost impossible. Thanks to his hard work and the extensive therapy he’s received at Sunnyview, Mario is able to negotiate the stairs without assistance.
