Renovations Transform Salvation Army Homeless Shelter

Posted on: Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Freshly painted dining area has new floorsThe Schenectady Salvation Army’s well-used Evangeline Booth Home has been transformed into a bright, warm and welcoming space. Thanks to grants from The Schenectady Foundation and the Wright Family Foundation, the emergency homeless shelter for women and children, now feels even more like a home. The shelter provides private rooms, three meals a day, laundry facilities and referral and case management for up to 21 residents, who may stay up to 90 days. Last year, 754 women and children came through the doors of the Booth Home; in January 2011 more than 50 women and children were served.

The improvements include a new boiler, all new zero draft windows, fresh paint and new floors in the residents rooms, upgraded emergency lighting, new paint in the stairwells and hallways and new flooring in the common and dining areas. The new boiler improved the heating so much that the Booth Home is now able to make rooms available on the fourth floor during the cold winter months.

“On behalf of the residents, staff and advisory board, I would like to express my thanks for the generous support from both The Schenectady Foundation and the Wright Family Foundation, which allows us to continue serving those in need. The residents now have a warmer place to feel safe and secure,” said Major James Guest, Corps Commanding Officer, Schenectady Salvation Army (www.schenectady.salvationarmyny.org).
