Weekend Backpack Fund More Than Half Full

Schenectady’s Weekend Backpack Partnership is in full swing!  This week we served 1,010 food-insecure children in the City of Schenectady’s elementary school, providing a backpack full of nutritious food to last the weekend.

The Weekend Backpack Fund has received $35,000 in contributions since the campaign launched in September – just over halfway to our goal of raising $75,000 from the community. Our plan this year is to expand our reach and serve up to 1,500 hungry children in Schenectady County – including students in school districts outside the City. That means we must raise an additional $40,000 beyond what our funding partners MVP Health Care and SEFCU have already committed.

If you have contributed, thank you! Because of you, Schenectady's children and families will benefit from a source of nutritious food each weekend during the school year. The children return to school on Monday mornings better prepared to succeed. Our program data shows a correlation between the kids who are in this program and improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance.  And families in crisis are strengthened, allowing them to move toward stability.
